Newnan Mulch | Tips for Starting your Garden

versa-lok-mosaicAre you getting ready to start a garden this year? If you are new to gardening, you may feel overwhelmed if you do not know where to start. Here are a few tips to help you get moving in the right direction:

Mark It

The first step is deciding where your garden will go. Remember, your garden doesn’t have to be all straight lines! You can create fun, curvy borders if you desire. One tip that we love is to lay out your water hose with the edge that you want and then use flour or sand to mark the spot.

Dig It Up

If there is grass growing where your garden is going, you will need to dig that up. You can use a sod cutter or a spade to get that area ready. You will also have to dig out any rocks, roots and debris in that space. You can then till the ground and integrate some other organic materials such as compost.

Edge It

You also have the option of edging your bed. A trench that is about 8 inches wide and a couple of inches deep will help keep the lawn from growing back over your garden.

Lay Them Out

After you have done all of this work it is tempting to just start planting, but it’s a great idea to lay out all the plants to see how they will look. You can move them around until you find the look you want to achieve.

Get Planting

The time has finally come! Now that you know where your plants are going to go – you can plant them!  Typically, when you purchase plants it will have care instructions included. Take note of the required depths and instructions at this point.

Mulch It

After everything has been planted, it is time for our favorite part – mulching! Spreading a 2-inch layer of mulch around the plants will look beautiful, keep weeds at bay and conserve soil moisture – all great things for your garden.

We hope these tips will be helpful to you as you start your garden. If you have any other tips for beginning gardeners – stop by our Facebook page and share with our online community. We would love to hear from you!
