Newnan Mulch Supply | Lawnmower Maintenance Tips

When your lawnmower is not working properly, it can make cutting your grass even more of a chore. Take a look at a few things you can do to your lawnmower to make sure it is working how it should be.

  1. Use fresh gas: If old gas has been sitting in the gas tank for a long time, it can cause problems with your lawnmower such as a clogged up carburetor. You can use a turkey baster to remove any old gas from the gas tank and get it ready for fresh, new gas. Contact your local waste removal company for information on where you can dispose of the old gasoline.
  2. Change the oil: Just like your vehicle, changing the oil in your lawnmower will help the engine last longer. It’s recommended to change your oil every 25 hours of use. If you have never changed the oil in your lawnmower, do a video search on areputable website like www.familyhandyman.com for a quick and easy tutorial.
  3. Check the sparkplugs: If your lawnmower is older, changing the sparkplugs can improve how your lawnmower runs. If you still have your owner’s manual, take a look and find which kind of sparkplugs you need. If you no longer have the manual, you should be able to remove the sparkplugs and take them to your local hardware or automotive store and ask for help finding a new one of the same type.
  4. Check the air filter: Dirty air filters can choke the engine which will make it run poorly or even shut down altogether. A good test is to take the air filter and shine a flashlight through it. If you cannot see light shining through, you need a new air filter.
  5. Sharpen the blade: If your blade is dull, you will notice it becomes difficult mowing through taller patches of grass. You will be amazed at the difference a sharp blade will make when you are mowing your grass.
