Too Much Mulch

Laying down too much mulch can damage plant roots by suffocating and depriving the roots of moisture and air. Mulch should not be more than 3 inches deep around plants in your garden bed.

Tree Debris is Not Ideal Mulch

Some people like to use decayed branches and limbs as mulching in the yard. Be careful of this because these pieces decay at an accelerated rate and will not hold the same amount of moisture as standard mulch.

Using Stone as Mulch

Stone can be a great accent to any landscaping, but if your goal for mulch is to create a healthier area for your plants, stone is not the right choice. Stones will not provide the moisture that the soil and the plants need.

Mulch Volcanoes

When people mulch around trees, some tend to pile the mulch up around the base of the tree. This is a major no-no! We have a term for this—mulch volcano. Deep mulching around the base of the tree can actually cause the bark and the tree itself to rot.

No Mulch at All

Another mistake that people make is not mulching at all! Mulch inhibits weed growth, promotes soil moisture and health and prevents soil erosion. Not to mention, mulch adds a certain aesthetic to the landscaping. Why skip it? It’s an easy job and very inexpensive considering the benefits gained.
