Newnan Landscaping | Pool Safety Reminders

Most of us know how to keep our children safe around pools, but as they begin to get more comfortable in the water, it’s always a good idea to go back over pool safety guidelines. Unfortunately, over 200 children drown in just backyard pools every year, so be sure to sit down with your children and encourage them to always follow the rules and safety tips when they are around water.

  1. If you have a pool and small children, consider installing a gate with a door around the pool. Keep the pool covered with a safety cover when not in use. You can even purchase pool alarms that will alert you when someone enters the pool.
  2. Supervision is a must. Always keep a close eye when your children is in or around water. If you have young children, stay within arm’s reach. Accidents can happen in the blink of an eye, and while it’s impossible to not blink, we can stay vigilant when it comes to supervision at the pool.
  3. Teach your children to swim, or have them learn at a certified class/facility.
  4. Show your child techniques for getting into the shallow area or out of the pool when they begin to get too tired to stay afloat in deeper water.
  5. Always use flotation devices in young children who are not able to swim proficiently.
  6. Enforce rules such as “no running around the pool”, or “never swim alone” from an early age.
  7. Get certified in CPR and first aid. Accidents happen every day, so it’s always a good idea to know how to respond in an emergency.

We hope these tips will be helpful to you as we kick off the summer season and spend more time around water. Have a fun and safe summer!
