If your home is built on sloped land, making any changes to beautify your landscaping can be frustrating. Poor irrigation and constant soil erosion can make designing a practical landscaping almost impossible if you are unsure of what to do with your slopes. We have a few solutions for you!

Retaining Walls

A major problem with sloped yards is soil erosion. When it rains, soil washes away which can be very damaging to any plants in the area. Plants need soil to cover their roots, but if it is constantly being washed away, your plants will suffer. Installing retaining walls is a great way to tame your sloping property. Not only do they look gorgeous, but they will keep your soil right where it should be. The cool thing about retaining wall is you can build them with a variety of different materials. Whatever tastes you have, whether it is fieldstone, flagstone or concrete – the choice is yours!

When you build a retaining wall, you are not limited to just one. If your yard is especially sloped, your landscaping may benefit from a terrace, a series of retaining walls. Tiered retaining walls will give you a lot of flexibility when it comes to designing the surrounding landscaping and it can do an even better job at preventing soil erosion.

If you are not ready to tame your slope, but would prefer to just beautify that part of your property – boulders are a great option. Strategically placed boulders will give your slope character and more of a three-dimensional appearance. When you place your boulders, be sure to bury at least 1/3 of the rock to give a natural look. When boulders are simply placed on top of the ground, they can appear out of place and unnatural.
