Mulch & More | Spring Cleaning Tips for the Yard

versa-lok-mosaicSpring is here and we couldn’t be more excited! Flowers are blooming, beautiful weather (when it isn’t raining) and gorgeous landscaping all around. Traditionally, most people take the opportunity to spring-clean the home at this time of year, but do you spring-clean your landscaping? With the warmer weather, it is the perfect time to evaluate your landscaping and come up with a plan to “spring-clean” it up. Here are just a few ideas to help you get started:

Cleanup the Winter Mess

The winter season can do some damage to our landscaping, so take a look around and see what it has left for you. Here are a few things to look for:

  • Dead or damaged branches: Prune these back to allow for new growth this spring.
  • Overrun beds around plants: Use a rake to pull out all unwanted growth and leaves from the beds around your plants.
  • Old mulch: Your existing mulch may have thinned out or just lost its appeal over the past year. If you don’t want to remove it before adding new mulch, just fluff it up and leave it for extra nutrients for the soil. You can add new mulch to get to the look you want to achieve for your landscaping.
  • Check your hardscaping: Do basic cleaning on these areas and check aggregated walkways to see if they require more filling in the spaces.
  • Wood fences: Is your fence looking a little worse for wear? If the paint is still intact, give it a good scrub down. If it has been awhile since it has been painted, it may be time to give it a fresh coat.
